Jiffy Lube is a Houston based chain with over 2000 franchised service stations offering oil changes and related maintenance services. The corporate site claims that Jiffy Lube services over 20 million customers annually.

The site includes a store finder and local coupons.

Jiffy Lube is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pennzoil which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Corporation.

Jiffy Lube History

Jiffy Lube traces its corporate history to 1979 when a self made million named Jim Hindman bought the Jiffy Lube franchise system from a retired World War II Veteran from Hill Air Force Base named Edwin Washburn. The first stores were in Ogden. Records with the state show Washburn was using the name Jiffy Lube five years earlier (Salt Lake Tribune).

Legend says that Mr. Washburn developed the idea of using a pit for oil changes when back problems prevented him from crawling under his vehicle. Other sources say he copied the idea from a tire center. The franchises in Washburn's operation were largely army buddies who set up shop in Utah and Arizona.

Jiffy Lube went public in 1987 and grew to over a thousand stores by 1989. Pennzoil acquired Jiffy Lube in 1991. Shell acquired Pennzoil in 2002.

Jiffy Lube Problems

Some Jiffy Lube stores have a reputation for aggressively services consumers don't need. Even worse, some services may not be good for the car. The site Jiffy Lube problems tracks consumer complaints.

Some investigative reports found that some Jiffy Lube franchises charged for work that they did not perform. (YouTube).

Sadly, many service stations and dealerships are worse. A lubrication shop is usually only taking people for a twenty to fifty bucks. Dishonest dealers have the moxy to go for hundreds and thousands.
